Turning in a Kayak

One if the most important pieces of kayaking is turning. Some may think that the best way to turn a kayak right or left would be to paddle a forward stroke (front to back) on the opposite side of the direction they want the kayak to turn. Although this technique does work, a more effective way of turning the kayak is to actually do a deep reverse stroke (back to front) on the side of the direction you want the kayak to turn.

If you combine the reverse and forward strokes with the proper leaning, you will be able to turn your kayak on a dime.
