Slalom Kayaks

Kayak Slalom or Whitewater slalom is a competitive sport where paddlers race through gates in rapids as quickly as possible. It is one of the two kayak and canoe disciplines which can be found in the Summer Olympics, the other being Kayak/ Canoe Sprinting. The boats used in these competitions used to be heavy due to the materials they were made of, but the kayaks and canoes have become much lighter in weight over the years with the development of new materials like kevlar and carbon fiber.

Whitewater slalom has a few different classes of competition:

  • C-1 - Single Canoe
  • C-2 - Double Canoe
  • K-1 - Single Kayak
  • K-2 - Double Kayak

There are strict rules to whitewater slalom, which you can reveiw by visiting the ICF (International Canoe Federation). These rules regulate kayak size, kayak equipment, and many other things.

Slalom Kayaks are not designed for anything other than competition. They are simple in design, but made of very high quality materials. They are not easy to control and should not be used recreationally. Here is an image of a slalom kayak from KayaksPlus.com

Slalom Kayaks are often hard to find, so here are some manufacturers of slalom kayaks which you may refer to: Galasport, iTomco, Nomad
