- Rinse/ wash off the kayak after being in salt water. Salt will corrode any metal located on your kayak.
- Routinely clean and check the foot and seat mechanisms to make sure they are operating properly.
- Scratches and dings are going to occur, so check your kayak several times a season for any threatening areas that could break through while you are in the water. One technique known to work well is to pass a light under the bottom of the kayak while in a dark room. The light will show through the areas that have been warn too thin.
- If you find any dangerous areas on the kayak, fill them in. There are many different things that can be used to fill cracks in your kayak, like fiberglass just to name one. There are also other fillers and hardeners you can find. Try consulting automotive stores, hardware stores, or your retailer to get help finding what to use.
- Lubricate and joint mechanisms so they perform smoothly.
- Use protection products on any rubber located on the kayak so that the sun does not dry them out and make them crack and leak.
These are just a few basic tips of kayak maintenance. Take the time to do these things and get the full benefit from your kayak. Happy Paddling.
