The United States Coast Guard requires anybody on any body of water in any kind of boat to have some sort of floatation device, such as a life jacket. Not only is it the law, it’s a smart thing to have when you are paddling, you never know what could happen. There really is no reason not to have a life jacket when you are paddling because of the technology that exists today. There are so many different life jackets out there now that you WILL find one that suits your needs and is comfortable at the same time.
Advice
- Try on the lifejacket before you buy it.
- Make sure that the life jacket isn’t too tight because it will become uncomfortable and you will want to take it off while paddling.
- Make sure that the life jacket is not too loose or it will not serve to purpose of keeping you afloat, especially if the life jacketfalls off.
- Let your life jacket dry before storing to prevent mold development.
- Keep a spare life jacket or other floatation device in your kayak just in case.
