Spray Skirt
Usually made from nylon or neoprene, a spray skirt is a garment that is designed to keep you and your kayak water-tight. It wraps around the rim of the cockpit (coaming) and around your waist. These come in different sizes, so make sure that you get the proper size for your kayak and your waist.

Floatation Devices
Internal floatation devices other are primarily used for white water kayaks. You insert them in the cavities of the kayak and they provide more buoyancy for your boat, and less space in your cockpit if water gets in.

Water Pump
A water pump, or bilge pump, is a small pump that you keep with you in the kayak. It is similar in looks to a small hand pump, but it pumps any excess water out of your kayak instead of pumping air.

Absolutely necessary if you are going to be white water kayaking. Helmets come in all shapes and sizes and are needed to protect your head.

If you are going to be doing any intense kayaking you would probably want to get a paddle leash. This will prevent you from losing your paddle even if it gets torn out of your hands for some reason. You don't want to get caught in that situation.
