Kayaking is an extremely exhilarating sport that many people enjoy. Kayaking gets its name from the kayak, which is the small boats that are used in the sport. Kayaks have covered decks and a double bladed paddle that propels it. The three types of kayaks are rigid kayaks, folding kayaks and inflatable kayaks.

Of the three types of kayaks available, you will find that the folding kayak is the most usable due to the ease of transport. They design of the folding kayak is based on the original kayak design and is actually a very strong and sturdy kayaks that compares well with an inflatable kayak or a regular kayak.

A German tailor built the first folding kayaks in 1907 and tested it in the Mangfall River. Realizing that it worked the folding kayak became popular in Europe and soon world wide because of how easy it was to transport them.

Folding kayaks are made from a number of different materials, fibreglass, wood and even aluminum. Some kayaks may be made from a single substance where others may be a mixture, like aluminum and fibreglass. The kayaks lightweight frame is then covered with a thin fabric. Some kayaks have been designed to have built in air pockets that make the kayak harder to sink.

When you have a folding kayak you don't have to spend the money on a storage locker because the kayak easily fits in your car. It is easy to disassemble after each use and take up much less space than a regular kayak. This easy of storage makes the folding kayak a very useful piece of equipment. A big plus is that since a folding kayak can actually be stored correctly they will generally last longer than their rigid brothers.

The new folding kayaks are generally much faster and have a narrower beam and longer waterline. Bracing with a folding kayak is also much easier and tracking with them is very good.

When it comes to travel or storage of a folding kayak once it has been taken apart it will usually fit in one to three duffle bags that can then be checked as baggage for air travel or you can carry it with you for train travel. In the off season when you need to store it away it easily goes into a closet without having to rearrange everything.

Don't let the fact that they fold up bother you. A folding kayak is just a sturdy as other kayaks and folding kayaks are build to be especially strong. They are super sturdy, so much so that they have even been used in some very bold kayak trips like crossing the Atlantic Ocean.

Some of the military also use the folding kayak for when they need small, lightweight boats. Folding kayaks for military use are built using strong metal frames and this type of kayak is the best choice is a better choice for sea kayaking.

If you are on the market for a lightweight, study and portable kayak then a very good choice would be a folding kayak. It is a fact that folding kayaks are a bit more costly, however the easy of transport and storage make them worth the extra and when properly taken care of they generally have a very good resale value.
